If you Google “passion quotes”, an endless list of inspirational pictures and page results appear! You don’t need anyone to tell you that “finding your passion in life” is a hot topic.

Some of us are fortunate enough to pursue our passions and even get paid for it. For the rest of us, it’s a bit of a fluffy statement. There are bills to pay and responsibilities to take care of leaving no time to “pursue a passion” as a career or hobby, let alone figure out what we are passionate about.

So what does it mean to “do it with passion or not at all”? Yes, it’s impossible to have passion for every single thing that you do. Am I passionate about cleaning my house? Definitely not. But I urge you to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Take cleaning your house, for example. If you purchased your house, you probably saved and saved and saved for a down payment. And even if you’re renting, you carefully selected your house based on a specific list of criteria. You were ecstatic to move in and finally call the house yours. And here you are, stuck cleaning it. Conditioning all your leather furniture (like I did today for two whole hours), scrubbing down the bathtub, dusting all the nooks and crannies … glamorous. But looking at the big picture, all this cleaning is totally worth it. You’re proud of your home and you want to take care of it. You want people to come over and love the place as much as you do. You want to restore it into all its former super-clean show-home glory.

When you’re at your day job and you’re not particularly interested in your current task, think about the big picture. Why are you doing this? Why are you here in the first place? Is there an end goal that this task is a stepping-stone for? Is there a bigger project that this task is a part of? Are you doing this for your kids? Do you want your company to excel in industry? Do you, yourself, want to excel as a leader in the organization? Do you want to be a role model for others? Think about the big picture and use that to fuel your passion in anything that you do. That way you end up being passionate about the little things! Like conditioning leather or formatting a spreadsheet 🙂
